Steven Morris



STEVEN MORRIS, pianist, holds degrees in Piano Performance and Accompanying from UNC-Chapel Hill, Western Michigan University, and New England Conservatory. In addition, he trained at the Blossom Festival, the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies, and the Cleveland Art Song Festival.

As artistic director and pianist of
Boston Vocal Artists, which he founded in 1999, Morris has excelled in selecting imaginative and compelling repertoire to effectively showcase singers. Through coaching, mentoring and skilled pianistic support, he has shared in performances of numerous recitals and directed many staged and semi-staged operatic and music theatre productions. Morris currently serves as coach and accompanist for the Tufts University Music Department and as music director of the Tufts Opera Ensemble.

Mr. Morris has also been on the faculties of the Bayview Music Festival in Michigan, the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Chiari, Italy, and (most recently) La Musica Lirica in Novafeltria, Italy, where he conducted performances of Monteverdi’s Il Coronazione di Poppea as well as serving as repetiteur and chorus master for Verdi’s La Traviata. From 1996 to 1999, Morris was the head coach of Opera Maine where he advised, prepared and performed in recitals and productions such as The Tender Land, The Telephone, L'Heure Espagnole, Tartuffe, The Medium, Amelia Goes to the Ball, The Impresario, Rita, and The Rape of Lucretia.

Mr. Morris’s recent professional engagements include a concert of operatic scenes and a production of Seymour Barab’s Pizza con funghi with Boston Opera Collaborative, and a highly acclaimed production of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at Tufts University. This summer he returns to La Musica Lirica’s program in Italy to serve as music director and pianist for concerts of opera scenes with the Studio and Young Artists.

Mr. Morris maintains an active coaching and performing career in Boston and southern Maine.
